Home Energy
Join the Clean Energy Movement
Powering our homes with clean energy brings extraordinary benefits to our daily lives. It frequently lowers energy costs and reduces indoor air pollution for healthier homes. It is one of the most powerful actions we can take to reduce pollution and address the climate crisis.

In the foreground, the impressive Ashland Solar Co-op panels adorn the City’s Electric rooftop, and in the background, contruction of KDA’s new net-zero development project is underway, with 64 all-electric solar-powered homes.
Transitioning to clean energy
It matters where your energy comes from. The clean energy movement shifts energy production away from fossil fuels like gas, coal, and oil — and moves towards renewable energy sources with minimal pollution. Examples include:
- Solar power: Harnessing energy from the sun using solar panels.
- Hydropower: Using the energy of moving water to generate electricity.
- Wind power: Generating electricity from wind using wind turbines.

Improving energy efficiency
A crucial part of the movement, energy efficiency encompasses everything we can do to reduce the amount of energy required to heat, cool, and power our homes. Examples include installing energy-efficient appliances, using LED lighting, and turning off lights and electronics when not in use.

Weatherizing our homes
Weatherization is an important step — sealing the building envelope (think cocoon) so your home can retain energy. It’s the process of improving a home by addressing issues like air leaks and poor insulation. Weatherization improvements are powerful as they help provide long-term solutions to reduce home energy costs.
Examples include fixing drafty windows, sealing gaps around doors, patching holes in siding, and adding insulation.

Going electric
Electrification is one way to embrace the clean energy movement. It means replacing appliances that use fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) with ones that use electricity — which maximizes energy-efficiency.
Replacing your gas-powered car with an electric vehicle and replacing your propane-powered furnace with a heat pump are both examples of electrification.

What are the benefits?
COMFORT & RESILIENCY
Weatherized homes reduce drafts. They are cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, and protect indoor air from smoke intrustion.
LOWER ENERGY BILLS
Monthly utility bills for clean energy homes are often cheaper for most families – and electric appliances are more efficient.
AIR QUALITY & SAFETY
Clean energy homes are much healthier, with better indoor air quality and lower risk of asthma, fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
REDUCE POLLUTION
Switching to electricity reduces climate warming pollution and helps protect future generations.

Ashland’s electricity is powered by water
The majority of our electricity is powered by water. We own our Electric Company and purchase hydropower from Bonneville Power Administration. Very cool. Very clean.

Yard sign program
Show your neighbors that your house is on the path to electrification — with this beautiful yard sign!
Not only does this mean you are making a real difference, but it helps get the word out that electrification is one of the BEST ways to clean our energy supply and cool the planet.
Did you know?
A gas furnace produces more pollution than almost anything else we use — an estimated 4-8 tons of carbon emissions per year. That’s equivalent to a year of driving a gas-burning car!
