2023 Year in Review
ACC’s Streets For Everyone (SFE) Action Team had an incredible 2023! Throughout the year, we identified several opportunities to advocate for safer streets and a connected and protected bike network through town. We asked you to speak up, and you did – in unprecedented numbers. And it made a huge difference – thank you!
Here are a few of the highlights:
- The city will add buffered bike lanes on North Mountain (probably between East Main and the Bear Creek bridge) and Ashland Street (between Siskiyou Boulevard and Faith Avenue). ODOT controls Ashland Street between Faith and I5 so we asked them to match the city’s design in ODOT reconstruction scheduled for this year.
- The Council also directed that bike boxes be included at signalized intersections. That may mean bike boxes at Walker and Ashland Street and at North Mountain at East Main. (Details are under development.)
- The city’s Transportation Advisory Committee is compiling an inventory of bicycle parking as a first step in expanding bicycle parking locations.
Additionally SFE:
- Assisted in developing and improving the city’s Safe Route to School plan
- Collaborated with Piccadilly Cycles to provide bicycle parking/valet at the Tuesday Farmers Market
- Tabled at Earth Day, the Rogue Valley Bike Swap and the Monster Dash
- Helped stimulate the city’s interest in unbundled parking
- Organized two fun, short advocacy bicycle rides to Council Chambers
- Supported the launch of two bike buses for school-aged Ashlanders.
Coming Next!
We’re already mobilizing for action in 2024 – advocating that the Planning Commission includes extending the Central Bike Path among the city’s priorities for parks, open space and trails. Click here to learn more.
In the summer, the city will begin its update of the Transportation System Plan – our best opportunity to shape the future! To be successful, we need to continue to continue to grow, mobilize, show up, and be out in the community walking, biking, and rolling. We plan to organize some fun SFE events in 2024!
Together we’re building a powerful movement that will impact our community for decades to come. Here’s how you can help:
- Stay tuned and watch for future calls to action!
- Join our Action Team that works on policy and events. We use Slack to organize our teamwork and meet by zoom every two weeks. Email info@ashlandclimate.org to learn more about volunteering.
