Have you ever heard of a bike bus? Imagine a group of happy children on bikes pedaling a fixed route to school, picking up more mini cyclists as they pass various “stops” — just like a gas-powered school bus. Adult volunteers work together to lead the group, sweep the rear, and “cork” intersections. (If you’re having trouble picturing what this looks like, watch this video from Portland’s Alameda Elementary, which has hundreds of kids participating in a bike bus.)
This month, Ashland students had a chance to experience a bike bus! Twenty-five kids and volunteers joined the inaugural ride, which began at the corner of Helman and Hersey, and wound its way over to Willow Wind and Trails School.
The next bike bus ride is Nov.17. After that, they’ll take place on a monthly basis. To launch bike buses in additional neighborhoods and schools, parent volunteers are needed. For more information, including a map of the current route, stop schedule, and safety, check out this page.
